Our naturist trip to Lazio didn’t start with phenomenal prospects:
First our local contact had unexpectedly been called at the last minute to Sicily in a professional capacity, then the spa session we had intended to visit had been cancelled due to technical difficulties, and then we hadn’t been able to join up with any naturist group locally.
After a discussion amongst ourselves, we decided to make the most of our time anyway, and agreed to take a taxi immediately upon landing on Thursday from Fiumicino airport to the nearby official naturist beach, Focene spiaggia, only 10 minutes away by car.
This sandy beach stretches for 5.3 kilometers along the picturesque Tyrrhenian Sea coast. Even though the water looked harmless, swimming was not authorised.
We found a very deserted beach and were able to placidly sunbathe at liberty, sunshine of 19 degrees felt like high summer to us with our modest Irish expectations.
Another taxi took us to the hotel that would have been closest to Livia Spa.
On Friday morning I got a WhatsApp message from a committee member of the Lazio association, they informed me that they would join us at Capocotta, the very first naturist beach in the country, officially declared so in 2000.Â
Once there, we met a few Italian naturists and finally came in contact with the refreshing sea, a comfortable 16 degrees (I always have a thermometer at hand).
The naturist group hadn’t started to meet there regularly as the season had not begun yet, but we were thoroughly impressed by the sea, its fine shallow strand, and the lovely surroundings.
That day I got sunburnt despite having put sun creme on me a few times!
After saying goodbye to our new friends, we took a taxi and a train to our new destination northbounds.
We arrived at the quaint coastal towns of Santa Severa and Santa Marinella, where we stayed overnight.
The following day our local contact arranged for us to meet another member who showed us the way to the naturist beach Le Sabbie Nere, using the official access during the summer months, but less accessible in April. Notwithstanding some passage of quandary, we eventually arrived at the core of the naturist beach.
Virtual communication spread quickly and we were soon joined by other members of the association. A big flag was raised to mark the presence of the Italian naturist association. Le Sabbie Nere, with real black sand, turned out to be warmer in honour of its name.
The views could not be any more charming, what with Santa Severa castle in the background.
I finished my trip going back to Fiumicino that day and experiencing sunset next to the port.
Fabulous experience all in all!
We made friends, ate fantastic Italian food, relished the mild sunshine, practised naturism every day, and enjoyed truly high-class company and scenery!
