A Joyous and Empowering Day: Reflections on the INA & Body Paint Cork Bike Ride

The streets of Cork city came alive with the annual INA & Body Paint Cork bike ride taking center stage on the last weekend of August, an event that has steadily become a yearly tradition in the city. The excitement had already started building the night before, as many participants had attended a lively cabaret show and quiz night. The evening was filled with laughter, music, and camaraderie, setting the perfect tone for the next day’s event. People arrived at the ride fuelled with enthusiasm, still energized from the fun that was had the night before.

The morning of the ride was filled with an electric buzz of both excitement and anticipation. Cyclists began to gather bright & early, each contributing to the uplifting atmosphere that would define the day. Everyone was there for the same reason: to celebrate freedom, body positivity, and the sheer joy of cycling together in a unique and powerful way whilst highlighting the vulnerability of cyclists on the road of Ireland.

As people arrived, it was impossible to miss the vibrant colours and creative energy in the air, thanks to the incredible body painting that has become an essential part of the event. Many artists skilfully transformed participants into living, cycling canvases, each person wearing their designs proudly as they pedalled through Cork later that day. Laughter, support, and encouragement flowed freely, with participants helping one another get ready, whether it was with a splash of body paint or adjusting a bike or even getting a sneaky picture for their socials.

When the ride began, the energy shifted from preparation to pure exhilaration. As the group moved through the streets. It was more than just a bike ride—it was a statement, a celebration of bodies in all their natural forms, and a collective shout for body positivity. For many, the act of riding freely and unashamed in such a public space brought an incredible sense of liberation.

The INA has always championed this event as a way to promote the acceptance of all body types, while also raising awareness about the vulnerability of cyclists on the road. Body Paint Cork’s involvement adds an artistic and joyful dimension to this mission, making the event even more inclusive and celebratory. By joining forces, they have truly built an annual tradition that not only raises awareness but also fosters a sense of happiness and confidence that spreads contagiously throughout the community.

When the ride ended, I could not help but sit back and notice the look of pure exhilaration on the faces of the participants as they returned. There was a shared sense of accomplishment and camaraderie that extended far beyond the duration of the ride. For some, it was their first time, and they beamed with pride, having pushed through their initial nerves. Others were long-time participants but even they were clearly moved by the collective energy of the day.

The annual bike ride has become so much more than just a yearly tradition—it is a reminder of the importance of self-love, community, and freedom of expression. It is a time when people come together to support one another, breaking down societal barriers surrounding body image, and embracing every curve, scar, and mark that makes us unique.

Looking back on the day, it is clear that the INA & Body Paint Cork bike ride continues to bring immense joy to everyone involved. It’s a celebration of humanity in its most natural form, and it’s a day that leaves a lasting impact long after the paint has washed away and the bikes have been stored. Here’s to another year of empowerment, joy, and the ongoing ride toward body positivity and acceptance!

Until next year! ????????
